The Reception Location

We are having our reception in one of the buildings at the Missouri State Fairgrounds. It is a huge building that will definitely hold a few hundred people with no problems. It cost $450 to rent with a "move in" day the day before and a clean up day after. They have many buildings that would fit anyone's needs for reasonable prices. I would definitely suggest checking them out if you happen to have one in your area. The building has white interior so it is a perfect blank canvas for decorating.
We will be hanging close to a hundred burgundy, orange and white paper lanterns and the tables will be littered with candles for lighting. The building has bright flourescent lights so I did not want to even have to turn those on at all. I think the candles and lanterns will make a wonderful low lighted atmoshere for the reception. Here are some inspiration pics:

I am planning on hanging the lanterns with fishing wire and using led "throwies" that we will make. I got the led lights and batteries cheap from eBay and all we have to do is tape them together. I may also get a few battery operated ones for the bigger lanterns to make sure that there is plenty of light coming from them. I got my paper lanterns at different online stores such as: http://www.pearlriver.com/, http://www.paperlanternstore.com/ and http://www.asianideas.com/. I got a majority of mine on sale at different times from these stores.

I am renting the glass bowls, votive holders and tall cylinders from http://www.usrentsit.com/, a rental company in our area, for less than what it would cost for me to buy them, and I don't get stuck with them all after the ceremony. Checking out party and rental places is definitely a good idea if you want to save money. I am also buying personalized napkins from them for an awesome price. I'm getting 400 beverage and 400 lunch (800) napkins in burgundy and orange for $72. That ends up being about .09 a napkin. I am also looking to rent shepherds hooks instead of buying them. I found a rental company that has those but they were not available for my day. If I can't find them to rent then I plan to buy them online from http://www.cheringtonmetalcraft.com/. They sell 36" inch single legs for 3.95. I got burgundy and orange rubber calla lilies from Hobby Lobby for .99 a piece for the centerpieces. The flowers will be in water with floating candles so that's why I opted for the rubber ones. These flowers are the most realistic ones that I've seen and you can bend them however you need to. I got a ton of small burgundy and orange floating candles from the Dollar Tree, they were 6 for a $1. These match perfectly with my colors and will be in the bowls. I may also make burgundy and orange table runners with fabric from Wal-mart but only if I have the time to do it. Otherwise, I will add color to the tables with rose petals instead.

Another way I saved money was renting table linens from the university where I work. These were half the cost of other places, they are $3 a table cloth and these are for 8 foot banquet tables. Other places quoted between $7 and $8. Most universities have departments for Event/Conference planning, I would check those out if possible.
